Prestop Kiosk Solutions for the Airport of the Future

Prestop kiosk solutions strengthen the airport of the future

Airports worldwide are investing in technology that helps guide passengers through the terminal faster, more independently, and more accessibly. The demand for digital self-service continues to grow, partly because global passenger traffic reached record levels in 2024 and travelers see shorter queues as one of the most important improvements to the airport experience.

With Self Service Units (SSUs) and PRM Call Points, Prestop supports airports in improving passenger flows, service quality, and accessibility. Prestop solutions are used in international airport environments such as Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Hamad International Airport, Athens International Airport, Keflavík International Airport, and two airports we will be revealing soon!

Self Service Units: 24/7 digital support in the terminal

The Self Service Unit (SSU) is a digital service point that enables passengers to independently access information, continue their journey, and request assistance when needed.

An important USP of the SSU is the combination of self-service and personal support. By scanning their boarding pass, passengers can receive relevant information, such as location and flight details, after which they are guided step by step through their personal journey.

The SSU is designed for a wide range of users. The kiosk can be equipped with a large 32-inch PCAP touchscreen, HD camera, microphone array, speakers, Hearing Loop, and Storm AudioNav for visually impaired passengers. The SSU supports both independent navigation and video assistance with airport staff.

The latest generation of Prestop SSUs has been further developed based on practical experience at locations including Schiphol and Hamad International Airport. Improvements such as a smaller footprint, LED lighting for visibility and interaction, more efficient maintenance, and a better cost-benefit ratio make the SSU ideal for busy and demanding airport environments.

USPs of the SSU

  • 24/7 service point for information, wayfinding, and support.
  • Boarding pass scanner for personalized travel and flight information.
  • Video assistance via camera, microphone, and speakers.
  • Accessible design with Hearing Loop and tactile controller for passengers with visual or hearing impairments.
  • Move-to-Mobile functionality, allowing passengers to continue their session on their own phone via QR code.

PRM Call Points: better service for passengers with reduced mobility

Accessibility is becoming an increasingly important theme in aviation. Airports worldwide are working on barrier-free terminals, better support for visible and non-visible disabilities, and a more inclusive passenger journey.

Prestop’s PRM Call Points improve service for passengers with reduced mobility by providing a clear, reliable, and accessible contact point where passengers can directly request assistance and communicate with airport or service staff.

The latest PRM Call Point 3.0, developed and produced by Prestop for Schiphol, is designed for maximum accessibility and ease of use. Key features include high contrast, multilingual audio output, full operation via touchscreen and keyboard, face-to-face communication, a boarding pass scanner, and an on-screen keyboard.

These features improve not only the passenger experience, but also operational handling. Through boarding pass scanning and direct communication, assistance requests can be registered, interpreted, and followed up more efficiently. PRM Call Points can help solve challenges such as delays in assistance, communication barriers, and the growing need for efficient PRM services.

PRM Call Points also align with developments around the European Accessibility Act. From 28 June 2025 on, new European regulations require more accessible products and services, including digital services and passenger information in multiple accessible formats.

Custom kiosks: premium design with HI-MACS® and other materials

Terminals are high-traffic environments where digital solutions not only need to be reliable, but also need to have a high-quality appearance. Prestop supplies custom kiosks in various premium materials, including metal, stainless steel, glass, wood finishes, and premium solid surface materials such as HI-MACS®. This allows each kiosk to be tailored to the application, location, and desired look and feel: from robust self-service units for intensive daily use to elegant information pillars for premium terminal environments.

For airports, this freedom of material choice offers a major advantage. Not every terminal, application, or user group requires the same solution. Sometimes a robust metal housing is the best choice, for example for frequently used service points. In other situations, a high-end HI-MACS® finish is preferred to make the kiosk part of the architecture and premium passenger experience.

While standard metal kiosks are often primarily functional, HI-MACS kiosks add a premium brand experience to the terminal. This makes them suitable for information provision, transfer guidance, wayfinding, self-service, and hospitality applications in locations where appearance and ease of use are equally important.
